Betting On Horse Racing 101

June 2nd, 2013

Watching horse racing on TV from www.directstartv.com can be exciting and a lot of fun – especially if you’re a betting person and your horse wins.

Every year, the best three year old horses in the world compete in the Triple Crown: a trio of races that only eleven horses have ever won. One of the grand traditions of horse racing is betting on the winner. A standard bet at the race track is 2 on a horse to win. People bet on different horses for a myriad of reasons ranging from the horse’s name to picking at random to just thinking that the horse is pretty. The more experienced race goers, however, will look at less superficial factors.

Every horse will have morning line odds which indicate their predicted chances of winning the race. Odds of 1-8 indicate experienced handicappers think that horse has a better chance than one with 1-16 odds. One of the most important factors to consider is a horse’s race history. Has the horse won or at least placed well lately? While all of the horses competing the Kentucky Derby have to qualify, clearly some will have done with others. Another thing to consider is the length of these previous races. A horse who has won races at 1 1/8 miles is a better bet than a horse who has done well at 1 mile when it comes to the Derby since it is a 1 1/4 mile race. The horse’s pedigree could also be considered here especially if there is a sprinter or distance runner in his ancestry.

Veteran Triple Crown jockeys and trainers can also be key. The Kentucky Derby often has a field of 20 horses, more than run in almost any other race which makes experience important. Another thing to consider could be how often the jockey has ridden the horse and if they have a rapport which can be key for knowing how much energy the horse has left towards the end of the race.

While there are no guarantees when it comes to gambling, paying attention to the horse’s history can training can help you become better at placing that winning bet!
